With two major expansions of downtown Los Angeles cultural institutions in the works, Bunker Hill is primed to elevate its status as the region's leading arts center even as the area around it struggles with persistent homelessness and post-pandemic losses of office tenants.

Bunker Hill will soon have the largest concentration of buildings designed by Frank Gehry in the world and promises to become a cultural center "like no other place," the architect told the Los Angeles Times.

Chasing 5th straight win, Nelly Korda is 2 shots back at Chevron Championship after a first-round 68

  • By KRISTIE RIEKEN - AP Sports Writer

Nelly Korda, who is looking to tie an LPGA Tour record with her fifth straight win, shot a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the Chevron Championship. That leaves her two shots behind leader Lauren Coughlin in the year’s first major. The top-ranked Korda is seeking her second major after winning the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021. She could join Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events. The 31-year-old Coughlin has never won on the LPGA Tour and shot a bogey-free 66.

Nevada Supreme Court rulings hand setbacks to gun-right defenders and anti-abortion activists

  • By SCOTT SONNER - Associated Press

Nevada's Supreme Court has handed setbacks to gun-right defenders and anti-abortion activists in two new rulings. Nevada’s Supreme Court upheld the state’s ban on ghost guns Thursday, overturning a lower court’s ruling that had sided with a gun manufacturer’s argument the 2021 law regulating firearm parts with no serial numbers was unconstitutionally vague. The high court said in a unanimous decision Thursday the law's language passes legal muster. Abortion rights advocates cheered the other ruling in a fight over a voter petition on reproductive health care. But they've since replaced it with another petition they're confident will qualify for the November ballot focused specifically on abortion rights.

US deports about 50 Haitians to nation hit with gang violence, ending monthslong pause in flights

  • By GISELA SALOMON and ELLIOT SPAGAT - Associated Press

The Biden administration says it has sent about 50 Haitians back to their country, marking its first deportation flight in months to the Caribbean nation struggling under surging gang violence. Authorities didn’t offer details of Thursday's flight beyond how many deported Haitians were aboard. The Homeland Security Department said it will continue to enforce U.S. laws and immigration policy throughout the Caribbean, as well as at the southern border. Haitians were arrested crossing the border from Mexico 286 times in the first three months of the year. That's just a tiny fraction of the more than 400,000 arrests among all nationalities.

The Timberwolves coaching staff, empowered by Finch and energized by chemistry, is a true asset

  • By DAVE CAMPBELL - AP Sports Writer

The Minnesota Timberwolves coaching staff is one of many assets the team takes into the playoffs. The Timberwolves face Phoenix in the first round. Head coach Chris Finch is a strong contender for the NBA Coach of the Year award after steering the Timberwolves to a 56-26 record that was the second-best in franchise history. Finch's assistants have credited him for his empowerment and leadership without micromanagement. The entire staff relishes its chemistry. Assistants form a human tunnel in the hallway before each game that Finch walks through before the staff lets loose with hollers, shoulder shoves and hand slaps.

Hawaii Supreme Court chides state's legal moves on water after deadly Maui wildfire

  • By JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER - Associated Press

The Hawaii Supreme Court says the state attorney general's office must pay attorney fees for using last year's Maui wildfire tragedy to file a petition in “bad faith” that blamed a state court judge for a lack of water for firefighting. The ruling says the state tried to leverage the most horrific event in state history to advance its interests. The day after Lahaina burned in a deadly August fire, the state attorney general's office filed a petition alleging east Maui stream flow protections established by Judge Jeffrey Crabtree caused the water shortage. The Sierra Club of Hawaii says the state exploited the tragedy to help a private company monopolize water.

A judge has denied a request by the owner of Bob Baffert-trained Arkansas Derby winner Muth for the colt to run in next month’s 150th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Jefferson County Circuit Judge Mitch Perry declined Thursday to grant a temporary injunction to Zedan Racing Stables, which had argued that the ban of Baffert was “illegal.” Muth won the Arkansas Derby on March 30 but is ineligible to receive the 100 points that would have put him in the Run for the Roses because of Baffert’s suspension. US committee releases sealed Brazil court orders to Musk's X, shedding light on account suspensions

  • By JULIA CARNEIRO - Associated Press

A U.S. congressional committee has released confidential Brazilian court orders to suspend accounts on the social media platform X. The orders, disclosed late Wednesday, offer a glimpse into decisions that have spurred complaints of alleged censorship and suppression of free-speech from the company — and its billionaire owner, Elon Musk. The tech mogul, a self-proclaimed free-speech absolutist, had vowed to publish de Moraes’ orders, which he equated to censorship. His crusade has been cheered on by supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, who allege they are being targeted by political persecution, and have found common cause with their ideological allies in the U.S.
